Early identification of injury and risk factors likely to impact recovery is critical to ensuring a timely and sustainable return to work, and preventing Workers Compensation claims.
 
The traditional model of treatment within the Workers Compensation scheme relies on lodgement of a claim and medicalisation of treatment and recovery which has been demonstrated to prolong recovery and increase treatment costs. The solution to this lies with an Early Intervention model of care whereby assessment is completed at the earliest sign of an injury and treatment triaged into appropriate care. The primary aim of the Early Intervention Program is to provide targeted, evidence based, active treatment protocols to patients. By providing assessment, education and treatment as soon as possible after an injury or musculoskeletal complaint, recovery rates are maximized. As a by product this will also prevent unnecessary scans, treatment, time loss from work and potential surgical intervention.
 
The use of technology has allowed a rapid deployment of this intervention from anywhere in the country. Specific motion tracking technology is then utilized to engage, monitor and reward patients like never before to ensure that adherence to an evidence-based treatment protocol is completed. 
 
A change in the mindset and approach of employers is needed to realise that the biggest cost is the injury that you don’t address early enough. On the flip side implementing an Early Intervention Program has a greater value than purely injury recovery and prevention with employee support, satisfaction and wellness measures enhanced with such programs.
 
Early intervention and technology is the path to better outcomes for everyone.

The thing about wearables is they must be worn. 

The most important aspect of choosing to invest in an initiative like wearable technology is recognizing that it is reliant upon workers actually engaging in the program. To encourage this, safety teams must know how to communicate the valuable aspects of the feedback provided by the wearables, the types of feedback, how it works, and the neuroscience behind the behavioural change. The benefits are often lost due to a lack of understanding leading to worker complacency, non-compliance, and disengaged workers resulting in an unsuccessful initiative and financial loss.

The haptic biofeedback is largely responsible for the success of increased awareness and
behavioural change. The result is heightened engagement, leading to proactive injury
prevention with workers taking control of their own safety.

Have you ever been told you are doing something but never knew you were doing it? For
example, a friend says, “Do you know your shoulders elevate every time you talk about something you’re passionate about?”

Now this doesn‚Äôt create a safety concern immediately, but what if you were doing something you were not aware of and the resultant damage was causing harm to your body over a period of time? Would you want to be told and, how many times would it take before you stopped elevating your shoulders each time you were speaking excitedly? We have the answers! 

This session will be interactive, demonstrating the neuroscience behind the behavioural change, introduce new understandings around biofeedback and worker awareness, and how this empowers manual workers to be better at what they do.

As organizations increase their use of technology and data, and their employees are increasingly focused on how to exploit technology to enhance the resilience of their business, compliance activities will be expected to embrace this change. Better use of technology also positively contributes to improved health and well-being for all team members involved.

What will fundamentally drive change is not using technology to generate assurance faster, cheaper, or even more sustainably. What will really drive change is when we start using technology to create better assurance where fewer issues arise and trust within and between organizations and society is even stronger.

So, the methods we use to create assurance need to become continuous, predictive, and consider more data. They need to be relevant to the way organizations are managing information and focusing on sustainability. And it has been proven that digital engagement and remote auditing are effective in enhancing assurance.

BSI is leading in developing new assurance methods including continuous and predictive assurance and adaptive learning. We will see a paradigm shift in the way that assurance operates. Today, when we audit, we look at what has been done over the last 12 months and then we assess what went wrong or what didn’t. Looking to the future, we will add value by using technology to help mitigate future risks and help you to enhance performance across your organization. In this session will showcase our journey and innovations.

In this session we will learn how to flip this situation into a winning one – measure what matters to understand the benefits and logical steps for Good Work Design to manage the risks of sprains and strains in your industry, including the impact of psychosocial factors.  A productive, healthy and happy workforce is achievable.  Participants will also receive a copy of your organisation's vulnerability score and a 10-step process for improvement.

While it's vital lone & remote workers carry devices when out in the field, without users knowing how to activate the device, effective two way satellite communication and the operator knowing how to facilitate response, it’s all pointless!
 
The USER needs to have been well trained, to know how to operate the device. The OPERATOR needs to be well trained to know how to respond – they facilitate the rescue.
 
The SUPPLIER, an industry expert with integrity, needs to have supplied the best Fit-for-purpose solution. Ensuring the technology is reliable and the signals are received reliably from the device to the Monitoring station, ideally through an API integration.

As the world around us becomes more and more connected and data-driven, companies have the potential to harness valuable information to benefit their businesses and workers. This session will discuss how wearable technology, machine learning, AI and cloud computing are helping company leadership gain valuable insights into understanding workplace risks, improving productivity and company culture, and mitigating hazards before accidents occur. Case studies from deployments of wearables in a variety of industrial environments will be examined and examples provided of how the data gathered from wearable devices has led to; work changes and process improvements, environmental hazards detected, uncovering harmful human motion, and positively impacting safety culture while respecting employee privacy.

As the focus on psychosocial risks, mental health and healthy workplaces continues to grow, so too do the many misconceptions. Taking an interdisciplinary, holistic approach from Safety Science, H&S Risk management and Neuroscience gives a much richer and deeper understanding to achieving robust mental health and compliance to regulatory requirements for Psychosocial Safety. This talk will demystify, clearly explain the differences, and the requirements for sustainable workplace mental health and healthy culture and explain what each requirement is and how it contributes to workplace mental health. We also discuss how doing them in a specific and right order is critical to obtaining sustainable mental health and why so many workplaces get it wrong.

'Jason Daniels' story - surviving an electric shock from overhead powerlines’, is a film about how quickly life changed for Jason's family when the grain auger he was moving contacted an overhead powerline.

Jason was just 17 when the serious electric shock he received from the powerline gave him horrific injuries. Jason's mother Di Daniels recalls the devastating phone call she received on the day it happened and the struggles they have faced throughout Jason's recovery.

Jason lost four toes and received serious burns. He was in an induced coma for two months and had nine operations.
Jason and Di are sharing their experience in this raw and real film to raise awareness about having a safe system of work in place before starting work and urging employers to listen when young workers speak up with safety concerns.
