Professional Bio
I am Sophia Francesca Lu, currently an international PhD student at the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety—Queensland University of Technology, and a Filipino citizen. I plan to return to the Philippines to teach at the University of the Philippine Diliman. My PhD research focuses on the occupational health of city bus drivers in the Philippines—my home country. I finished my undergraduate degree of BA Political Science (Honors) and master’s degree of Master of Statistics at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. I also taught Political and Economic Theories, Social Statistics, and undergraduate thesis at the University of the Philippines, Manila for three years (2015 to 2018). During my tenure at the University, I was the principal investigator for a road safety project funded by the University of the Philippines Manila entitled “Developing Road Safety Index on Road Traffic Crashes and Injuries in the Philippines” (please see attached certification of research project). I am currently also one of the co-investigators for the research program funded by the Emerging Inter-Disciplinary Research (University of the Philippines) entitled “HOW SAFE ARE OUR ROADS? The Components of Post-Crash Response, Safe Roads and Safe Vehicles in Road Management, Road Safety Index, and Road Legislations and Management in Making our Roads Safer”. The research program is in collaboration with Dr. Mark King from Queensland University of Technology. I have also presented in several conferences in line with the road safety field. I also have a publication entitled “Road Safety Performance Index in Metro Manila, Philippines” published in the Philippine Journal of Health Research and Development last 2018. I have also presented in various conferences on the topic of road safety. These include my presentation entitled “Road Crashes in Metro Manila Overview of Road Safety” at the 12th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion (2016). I was also invited to speak by the Undersecretary of Health on road traffic crash in the Philippines at the State of Violence and Injury in the Philippines: A Stakeholders’ Forum organized by the Department of Health Philippines.
